Post
For more than 40 years, I have been blessed to participate in — and even, at times, to lead — a growing revolution in mental health science triggered by the global realization that serious emotional traumas at any age are caused by experiences of moral betrayal rather than exposures to extreme physical danger, that recovery from a moral injury trauma depends more on the availability of social and spiritual resources than on personal coping skills, and that most mental illnesses are the result of unhealed moral injuries complicated by chronic stress rather than preexisting psychiatric vulnerabilities merely uncovered by stress.
I launched Angelbrain.net to support this humanistic revolution in mental health science and public mental health practice in two ways. First, Angelbrain contains a searchable archive of historical, scientific, and unclassified government documents I have collected over my decades of practice, research, and public service. These documents — many of which are no longer available anywhere else — can be useful breadcrumbs for anyone to follow who wants to learn how certain current programs and projects related to public mental health and the prevention of stress-related mental health problems like PTSD, burnout, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide were developed and fielded. The following are some of the searchable topics for which extensive documentation can be found on Angelbrain:
I will keep updating this archive as I find or create new documents that support humanistic mental health science and practice.
The second way I hope Angelbrain.net will support the global humanistic revolution in mental health science and art is as a forum for the discussion of emerging ideas and practices related to the prevention, recognition, and treatment of moral injury traumas in individuals, families, organizations, and communities. I have never blogged before (and since Angelbrain.net is newly launched, it has no idea yet what it wants to be when it grows up), so I can’t predict how often I will publish a new posting. And I certainly can’t predict whether any of my future posts will be of interest or utility to anyone, let alone spark meaningful online conversations. But we can’t know unless we try.
Please consider subscribing to my newsletter so you will receive every update, and commenting on this or any other posts on Angelbrain. Most importantly, shoot me a comment about what topics related to moral injury and humanistic public mental health you would like me to explore in future blog posts. I am also always eager to answer questions about my work. Just contact me.
Oh yeah — if you want to know what the name of this website means, please take a look at my Moral Engine Model theory paper and the presentation I delivered at the annual well-being leadership conference at Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, on 22 May 2026, entitled “Goodness in the Face of Evil: What? Why? How?”
In closing, let me offer the invocation one hears everywhere in Ukraine at the beginning and end of each air alert triggered by overhead Russian missiles or drones: “May the Force be with you.”
